The late nationalist, Cde Peter Chanetsa, who died in the early hours of Monday this week has been declared a national hero.

The former governor for Mashonaland West Province was declared a national hero after round-robin consultations with politburo members.

The national hero’s status was announced by Acting President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the Chanetsa homestead in Harare this evening.

Meanwhile, family members are meeting to make final arrangements for Cde Chanesta’s body to be taken to his rural home before burial possibly on Saturday at the National Heroes Acre.

Cde Chanetsa became the first Chief Protocol Officer in the Office of the then Prime Minister in 1980 and rose to become Mashonaland West governor.

Cde Chanetsa, who was a member of the Zanu PF Central Committee at the time of his death, leaves behind his wife, Beatrice and three sons.
