US$250 000 is urgently required for the emergency response to combat the spread of typhoid in Harare.

This came out at a press briefing for an inter-ministerial committee meeting to address typhoid in the capital.

Briefing journalists in the capital this today on what the inter-ministerial committee on typhoid made up of the Ministries of Health and Child Care, Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Small and Medium Enterprises and Cooperative Development and Environment, Water and Climate, the Minister of Health and Child Care Dr David Parirenyatwa said vending especially of processed and unprocessed foodstuffs has reached alarming levels in the capital and to combat typhoid this must stop.

The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Cde Saviour Kasukuwere also reiterated the need for local authorities to ensure good sanitation so that disasters such as typhoid are prevented.

Other measures that have been taken include the putting in place of 24 hour refuse collection within the central business district, a shorter response time to sewer system bursts and blockages, health education, promotion and advocacy programmes.

In the current outbreak, Harare has reported 126 suspected typhoid cases, 12 confirmed and two deaths.
